Synopsis
Soldier of Orange (Soldaat van Oranje, 1977) is a Dutch war drama you can watch online on iFILM. Directed by Paul Verhoeven, starring Rutger Hauer and Jeroen Krabbé, 148 minutes. Based on the autobiography of Erik Hazelhoff Roelfzema — a Dutch resistance operative, RAF pilot and eventual aide-de-camp to Queen Wilhelmina in exile.
Germany moves into the Netherlands in May 1940. Six university friends go separate ways: some resist, some flee, one crosses over to the occupiers. Erik Lanshof — drawn from Roelfzema's own account — slips out of occupied Holland, reaches England and ends up inside the Dutch government-in-exile. Verhoeven earns the runtime; the film gives room to betrayal, dumb luck and fear alongside the courage.
Rutger Hauer's international career began here. Verhoeven left for Hollywood shortly after — RoboCop, Total Recall, Basic Instinct followed. Still counts among the most significant Dutch films ever made. Stream Soldier of Orange (1977) on iFILM.
