Synopsis
Taxi for Tobruk (Un taxi pour Tobrouk, 1961) is a French war drama by Denys de La Patellière you can watch online on iFILM. North Africa, deep in the desert campaign. Four French commandos pull off a raid and find themselves stranded behind enemy lines, hundreds of miles of German-held sand between them and safety.
Their way out is a stolen armored car and a captured German officer, played by Hardy Krüger — the only one who can steer the thing through minefields. So sworn enemies end up crammed into the same cab. Lino Ventura is the gruff sergeant; Charles Aznavour plays a Jewish pharmacist who falls into the film's most surprising argument with the prisoner about faith and decency. The longer the road runs, the harder it gets to pull a trigger on the man you've been sharing water and cigarettes with.
Released while France was tearing itself apart over the Algerian War, the film lands its anti-war message hard. This isn't a movie about heroics — it's a quiet study of how fast the line between "us" and "them" dissolves once a few men are left alone in the dunes. The ending hits like a gut punch.
