Synopsis
The Desert Fox: The Story of Rommel (1951) is Henry Hathaway's war drama, and you can watch online on iFILM. James Mason stars as Field Marshal Erwin Rommel, the commander North Africa came to call the Desert Fox — respected even by the men he fought.
The story follows Rommel from his armored victories to El Alamein, where the tide turns against him for good. Sent home to Germany, the general starts to doubt the leader he swore loyalty to, and edges toward the conspiracy to remove Hitler. Jessica Tandy plays his wife Lucie, and a circle of fellow officers prepares to gamble everything. You may know how it ends, yet Mason keeps the screws tight right up to the final frame.
The screenplay draws on the biography by Britain's Desmond Young, who turns up on screen himself. It was among the first Hollywood pictures bold enough to treat a German commander as a man rather than a poster villain, which is exactly why it stirred argument the year it opened.
