Synopsis
Battle of Britain (1969) is a British war epic directed by Guy Hamilton — watch online on iFILM. The summer of 1940: Germany has swept through continental Europe and is now demanding air supremacy before any seaborne invasion can happen. The RAF refuses to fold. What follows is the longest sustained aerial campaign of the war, fought over the Channel and the English coast day after day for months.
Hamilton assembled an extraordinary ensemble on both sides: Laurence Olivier as Air Chief Marshal Dowding, Michael Caine as a Spitfire pilot running on fumes, Christopher Plummer as an officer whose wife refuses to leave London, alongside Robert Shaw, Trevor Howard, Ralph Richardson, and Susannah York. The German command falls to Curt Jürgens. The production was remarkable for its period — the crew gathered more airworthy period aircraft, including genuine Spitfires, Hurricanes, and Messerschmitts, than any air force in the world had flying at the time.
The film earns its scale by refusing to glamourise the odds. Pilots are replaced faster than they can be trained; the attrition is quiet, constant, and the real subject of the movie. Hamilton, who had just directed two Bond films, brought spectacle without losing the weight. Stream Battle of Britain (1969) on iFILM.
