Synopsis
Bathory: Countess of Blood (2008) is a lavish historical drama you can watch online on iFILM. Slovak director Juraj Jakubisko hands the role of Hungary's richest widow to British actress Anna Friel.
For four hundred years Elizabeth Báthory has been the woman who supposedly bathed in the blood of servant girls to stay young. Jakubisko isn't buying it. His countess is sharp, literate and cornered, surrounded by men who want her estates far more than her soul. A scheming palatine (Karel Roden), spying monks, a wandering painter and a healer whose herbs look a lot like witchcraft to frightened peasants. The film leaves you to sort rumor from record.
Shot over several years, it arrived as the most expensive production Czech and Slovak cinema had ever mounted, and the money shows in every castle wall and brocade gown. Franco Nero and Vincent Regan widen the canvas. If you're tired of cartoon villainesses, here's a monster story where the real predators might be the men.
