Synopsis
Richard Pryor: Live on the Sunset Strip (1982) is the concert stand-up film you can watch online on iFILM. The camera captures a single night at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles, where Pryor holds the room alone for more than an hour.
He digs into the things that hurt: racism and the gulf between Black and white America, Hollywood and his own movie roles, a trip to Africa that changed how he heard the language of the streets. And then he goes there — openly, for the first time, about drugs and about the night of June 9, 1980, when he set himself on fire while freebasing. The worst moment of his life becomes a bit that makes you laugh and flinch at once.
Director Joe Layton mostly steps back and lets the man work; it all rides on his face, his voice, his fearless honesty. A benchmark that comics still study today. If you love smart, painfully personal, uncensored comedy, don't skip this one. Stream Richard Pryor: Live on the Sunset Strip (1982) online on iFILM.
