Elles

Elles (2011) is a French-Polish drama you can watch online on iFILM. Directed by Małgorzata Szumowska and led by Juliette Binoche, the film follows Anne, a Paris journalist working on a piece for Elle magazine about female students who fund their education through sex work.

Anne interviews two women — Alicja and Charlotte — and their frank, matter-of-fact accounts begin to refract her own life back at her. She has the apartment, the husband, the dinner parties, the career. None of it feels as settled as it did before she started asking questions.

Szumowska refuses to frame the film as exposure or rescue narrative. She just watches, steadily. Binoche plays Anne at a controlled distance from the audience — the character's composure is exactly what makes her the most unresolved person on screen.
