Synopsis
Beau Travail (2000) is a French drama by Claire Denis — one of the landmark art films of its decade — and you can watch it online on iFILM. Former Foreign Legion sergeant Galoup narrates from memory: sun-scorched Djibouti, the daily grind of drills, the almost choreographic repetition of soldiers' bodies in motion. He was once content inside that rigid world. Then a recruit arrived.
Denis Lavant plays Galoup as a man quietly consumed by something he cannot name. The newcomer Sentain, played by Grégoire Colin, draws out a jealousy that has no rational object — not rank, not command, just a slow-burning fixation that corrodes everything Galoup has built. Claire Denis tells the story almost entirely through movement and image, with barely any dialogue, drawing on Herman Melville's Billy Budd as her source.
The film resists plot in any conventional sense. What it offers instead is precise and strange: the military as a stage for questions about beauty, desire, and the violence of repression. Denis' camerawork and Agnès Godard's cinematography make every frame count. Stream Beau Travail (2000) online on iFILM.
