Synopsis
Marked Woman (1937) is a crime drama from Warner Bros. you can watch online on iFILM. Director Lloyd Bacon drew on the 1936 prosecution of Lucky Luciano, and the film moves with the cold logic of a case that everyone knows is dangerous to pursue.
Mary Dwight (Bette Davis) works the floor of a Manhattan nightclub run by gangster Johnny Vanning (Eduardo Ciannelli). She follows the rules: stay quiet, stay useful, don't make trouble. Then Vanning has her younger sister killed. District attorney David Graham (Humphrey Bogart) needs witnesses to take Vanning down; Mary and four of her coworkers are his only shot. Going to court means Vanning finds out — and Vanning does not forgive.
Davis plays Mary as someone who isn't brave so much as finished with being careful. She isn't after justice; she's out of options. That distinction gives the film an edge most 1930s crime pictures don't bother with. Stream Marked Woman (1937) online on iFILM.
