Synopsis
Madigan (1968) is Don Siegel's hard-edged crime thriller, available to watch online on iFILM. Two New York detectives corner a wanted fugitive, Barney Benesch — and walk away having lost their service revolvers to him. The brass gives them seventy-two hours to bring him in.
Richard Widmark plays Madigan, a cop who trusts his fists and his street contacts more than the rulebook. As he and his partner sweep the city for Benesch, Police Commissioner Russell — Henry Fonda, all cold integrity — works the other end: handling the politics, the grieving widows, the questions about how his men actually do their jobs. Street and office pull against each other, and neither man comes out clean.
Siegel shoots the procedural without gloss: tired faces, dim stairwells, a moral code where everybody bends a little. Five years before Dirty Harry, the director was already sketching his blunt, kinetic style, and the Widmark-Fonda pairing gives the film its real friction — two opposite ideas of what the badge is for. If you go for lean 1960s American crime pictures, settle in. Stream Madigan (1968) online on iFILM.
