Synopsis
Memories of My Father (El olvido que seremos, 2020) is Fernando Trueba's drama, which you can watch online on iFILM. At its heart is Héctor Abad Gómez, a Medellín physician for whom medicine was less a career than a way to defend the people his city overlooked — the poor, the children of the slums, the voiceless.
Javier Cámara plays him as a son would remember a father: warm, stubborn, a little naïve in his faith that clean water and vaccines could change a country more than any politics could. Around him, the Colombia of the 1970s slowly fills with fear and guns, and a man who heals and speaks up becomes, step by step, a target. The film takes its time — first a long, sunlit childhood in a big household, and only then the shadow that settles over it.
Trueba adapted the memoir that writer Héctor Abad Faciolince wrote about his own father, a book read across Latin America almost as a national text. It screened in the 2020 Cannes selection and works not through big set-pieces but through a quiet tenderness toward a man now gone. Gentle, luminous and finally heartbreaking, it's for anyone who loves sweeping family dramas built on a real life.
