Synopsis
Bernard and Doris (2006) is a Bob Balaban drama you can watch online on iFILM, with Susan Sarandon as tobacco heiress Doris Duke — once the richest woman in America, and by the end one of the loneliest.
Doris rattles around a vast estate with three failed marriages behind her and a queue of fortune-hunters at the gate. Then a new butler arrives: Bernard Lafferty (Ralph Fiennes), a recovering alcoholic from Ireland with impeccable manners and nowhere else to go. What grows between them is hard to name — part employer and servant, part odd surrogate family, the two of them trading barbs and champagne into the small hours. When she writes him into her will, the relatives lose their minds.
Made for HBO, the film rests entirely on its two leads, who play it quiet and unshowy. A chamber piece about money, isolation and loyalty that can't quite be bought — made for viewers who'd take two great actors over a busy plot. Stream Bernard and Doris (2006) online on iFILM.
