Synopsis

Set in a 10th-century court torn by intrigue, it follows Crown Prince Wu Luan, who has loved Little Wan since childhood — until his father the emperor takes her as his wife. When the emperor's brother murders him, seizes the throne and the empress with it, the prince comes home for a reckoning. A grand banquet turns into a chess game where a single wrong move costs a head. Zhang Ziyi rules the screen as the empress, with Daniel Wu, Zhou Xun and Ge You around her.
It's essentially a Chinese Hamlet — the same doubt, the poisoned blade, the fatal feast — only the Danish castle becomes crimson halls, silk and fight choreography from the Crouching Tiger team.
