Synopsis

When the Lights Went Out (2012) is a British horror film you can watch online on iFILM. The Maynards move into their dream house in a small Yorkshire town, never suspecting something already lives behind the walls.

The story is set in 1974. A father, a mother and their teenage daughter first blame the draughts and the old wiring. Then objects start to move on their own, the lights cut out, and at night the daughter feels pulled toward a presence that has no intention of leaving. Director Pat Holden builds the fear through slow realization rather than cheap jolts: the thing in the house is something the local church and neighbours would rather not name aloud.

The film draws on the Black Monk poltergeist case from Pontefract — the most heavily documented haunting on record in Britain — and Holden built it partly from stories told within his own family. Kate Ashfield, Steven Waddington and Martin Compston anchor a cast surrounded by ungilded 70s detail: brown wallpaper, cheap whisky, cramped rooms. If you favour old-fashioned English ghost stories over digital spectacle, there's plenty here. Stream When the Lights Went Out (2012) online on iFILM.
