Synopsis
The Weeping Meadow (Το Λιβάδι που δακρύζει, 2004) is Theo Angelopoulos' sweeping historical drama, free to watch online on iFILM. It opens on a bare Greek shore: a line of refugees in black steps off the water with suitcases and children, looking for a homeland they will never quite reach.
The film tracks Eleni (Alexandra Aidini) and the two men who love her across four decades — from the early-century exodus out of Asia Minor to the Greek Civil War. Separations pile up, reunions break apart, and private lives keep colliding with the century's upheavals. A flooded village, slaughtered sheep hung from a tree, an endless procession by the river: Angelopoulos shoots in long, unbroken takes that ask you to slow down and look.
This is the first chapter of the director's unfinished trilogy on the twentieth century, a Greece–Germany–France–Italy co-production. It is patient, painterly cinema rather than easy entertainment — best for viewers who want a film that treats time like a slow current. Stream The Weeping Meadow (2004) online on iFILM.
