Synopsis
Marie's Story (Marie Heurtin, 2014) is a French drama you can watch online on iFILM. It's the late 1800s. Marie is born deaf and blind, and to her craftsman father she's closer to a wild animal than a daughter — impossible to reach, impossible to calm. Out of options, he brings her to a convent institute for deaf girls near Poitiers.
There Sister Marguerite takes her on, played by Isabelle Carré. The other nuns have written the girl off as unteachable; Marguerite refuses to. The role of Marie went to Ariana Rivoire, a deaf actress in real life, and it changes everything — the scenes between her and Carré aren't mime but a genuine fight for every gesture, every word spelled into a palm. The first breakthrough is a single sign: "knife." From there grows a whole language built on touch.
Director Jean-Pierre Améris bases the film on the real Marie Heurtin and resists easy sentiment — the patience here is earned through tantrums and stubbornness on both sides. A quiet, forceful watch for anyone who loves The Miracle Worker and stories about people who won't give up. Stream Marie's Story (2014) online on iFILM.
