Synopsis
Miss Granny (수상한 그녀, 2014) is a South Korean comedy-drama with music that you can watch online on iFILM. It comes from Hwang Dong-hyuk, the director who would later make Squid Game. The premise: a cranky 74-year-old widow wakes up in her own twenty-year-old body and chooses to live her youth all over again.
Oh Mal-soon is a nightmare to live with — she needles her daughter-in-law, picks fights over nothing and runs the whole household ragged. When the family starts whispering about a nursing home, she drifts through the city and wanders into an odd little photo studio. One portrait later, the face in the mirror belongs to a girl of twenty. Renaming herself Oh Doo-ri, she throws herself into it: she joins the band her grandson plays in, turns a music producer's head, and rediscovers what it feels like to have a whole life still ahead. Shim Eun-kyung plays two women in one body, a grandmother's habits behind a young face, and the entire film rests on her.
The movie became one of Korea's biggest box-office hits of its year and spawned a string of remakes across Asia. Under the laughs sits a real ache about roads not taken and what mothers give up for their families. It's for anyone who likes a comedy that sneaks up and breaks your heart.
