Synopsis
The Desert of the Tartars (Il deserto dei Tartari, 1976) is a historical drama you can watch online on iFILM. Valerio Zurlini adapts Dino Buzzati's celebrated novel, shooting in the Iranian desert with a remarkable European cast: Jacques Perrin, Vittorio Gassman, Giuliano Gemma, Max von Sydow, Philippe Noiret, Fernando Rey and Jean-Louis Trintignant.
Young Lieutenant Giovanni Drogo is posted to the remote Bastiani fortress, hemmed in by sand on one side and a wall of mountains on the other. Somewhere beyond, the garrison believes, a Tartar army waits to attack. So the soldiers watch the horizon and wait. Some still believe; others gave up years ago. Months turn into years, the enemy never comes, and Drogo's whole life quietly drains away on the ramparts.
This was Zurlini's final film, a slow, hypnotic parable about duty and the time we waste waiting for something that may never arrive. Ennio Morricone's austere score and the bleached stone walls hold it at a deliberate crawl — patient, cerebral cinema for viewers who want stillness rather than spectacle.
