Synopsis
Emma (2009) is the BBC's four-part Jane Austen adaptation you can watch online on iFILM. The young mistress of Hartfield has no plans to marry herself. Other people's love lives, though, she considers entirely her business.
Emma Woodhouse (Romola Garai) takes shy, easily led Harriet under her wing and starts arranging a suitable match — reading signals that aren't there and missing the ones that are. Her fretful father (Michael Gambon) dreads a draught more than his daughter's solitude. The one man who tells her the plain truth is Mr Knightley (Jonny Lee Miller), the family friend who has watched her grow up. The harder Emma plays matchmaker, the less she understands her own feelings.
Director Jim O'Hanlon works from a script by Sandy Welch, who also adapted Jane Eyre and North & South for the BBC. This version runs warmer and funnier than most period drama, trading lecture for sly comedy about clever people refusing to see what's in front of them. A good pick if you like unhurried English costume series built on sharp dialogue. Stream every episode of Emma (2009) online on iFILM.
