Synopsis
Sister Smile (Sœur Sourire, 2009) is a Belgian biographical drama you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Stijn Coninx. It follows Jeannine Deckers, a Dominican nun whose 1963 recording of "Dominique" climbed to number one in the United States, Britain and across Europe — a pop sensation in a nun's habit who had never planned on being famous.
The film doesn't stop at the peak. It follows Deckers out of the convent, through recording sessions that went nowhere, and into a years-long fight with the Belgian tax authorities who billed her for every royalty she had never personally received. Cécile de France carries the film with a performance that refuses easy sympathy — Deckers is complex, difficult, searching.
