Synopsis
The Drug King (마약왕, 2018) is a South Korean crime thriller you can watch online on iFILM. Directed by Woo Min-ho, it traces a small-time Busan smuggler's climb from peddling gold watches to running the country's entire meth trade.
Busan, the early 1970s. Lee Doo-sam ferries someone else's shipment of methamphetamine to Japan and realizes the stuff sells like gold there — and that the perfect lab can be built right at home in southern Korea. Bribed customs officers, prosecutors and bureaucrats follow, along with an export operation stamped, with cruel irony, "Made in Korea." Song Kang-ho plays a man who genuinely sees himself as a patriot and a generous neighborhood patron by day while poisoning his own country by night. A young prosecutor sets out to bring him down, ready to burn his career on a single arrest.
The whole film rides on Song Kang-ho: his Doo-sam is exactly as charming as he is repellent, and that tension never lets up across 139 minutes. Think Scarface relocated to the corrupt, smoke-filled Korea of the seventies. Stream The Drug King (2018) online on iFILM.
