Synopsis
The Cleanse (2018) is an oddball fantasy-comedy you can watch online on iFILM, the feature debut of writer-director Bobby Miller. It blends horror, heartbreak and deadpan absurdity into something genuinely hard to categorize.
Reeling from a brutal breakup, Paul signs up for a remote wellness retreat that promises to flush out every toxin in his body and mind. The herbal brew does its job a little too well: along with old trauma, each participant physically expels their pain as a small, grotesque, weirdly lovable creature. Paul bonds with his — and soon cares for the little demon more than he ever managed with people, which turns out to be its own kind of trouble.
The real draw here is the cast. Johnny Galecki, far from The Big Bang Theory, plays Paul with sad sincerity, backed by Anna Friel, Kyle Gallner and Anjelica Huston as the retreat's icy guru.
