Synopsis
An Idiot Abroad (2010) is a British travel series, half documentary and half comedy, that you can watch online on iFILM. Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant cooked up the idea, then handed it to their friend Karl Pilkington — a man with zero interest in seeing the world.
That gap is the whole joke. Gervais and Merchant stay home in England while Karl gets shipped off to the so-called wonders of the planet: the Great Wall of China, the pyramids at Giza, Petra, Chichen Itza. He grumbles, argues with local customs, complains about the food and the toilets, and offers blunt, unfiltered takes that leave Gervais howling down the phone. There is no breathless awe at the scenery here. Instead you get an honest portrait of a bloke who would rather have stayed in.
The show ran for three seasons on Sky1 and turned Pilkington into an unlikely source of quotable one-liners. It lands best with anyone who likes dry English humor and is tired of polished travel blogs. Stream An Idiot Abroad online on iFILM.
