The setting is the slow decline of seventeenth-century Spain under Philip IV. A dying comrade asks him to raise his young son and turn the boy into a soldier. From there the story winds through paid duels, the court intrigues of Count-Duke Olivares, the Inquisition, and a doomed love for an actress. Pérez-Reverte built Alatriste as a man of honor in a country that had long since put honor up for sale.

Across two and a half hours the film spans nearly two decades, from the Flanders mud to the rout at Rocroi. Its painstaking period detail, costumes and battle staging matter more than spectacle.
