Synopsis
Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007) is the British historical drama — Shekhar Kapur's follow-up to his acclaimed 1998 Elizabeth — that you can watch online on iFILM. Cate Blanchett returns as Elizabeth I, Geoffrey Rush as her spymaster Walsingham, and Clive Owen joins as the swaggering Walter Raleigh.
The year is 1585. Philip II of Spain is assembling an armada and calling it a holy war against Protestant England. At the same time, Mary Queen of Scots — a Catholic rival imprisoned on English soil and played with cold precision by Samantha Morton — quietly gathers conspirators around her. Elizabeth knows what the threads lead to. Ordering the execution of an anointed queen, though, means something more than removing a threat. Raleigh's arrival at court gives the queen a rare uncomplicated pleasure, which makes what follows considerably more complicated.
Kapur is less interested in naval tactics than in what isolation does to a woman who is never allowed to be merely a person. The battle sequences are spectacular but brief. The film belongs to Blanchett, who carries the weight of empire in a single look. Stream Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007) online on iFILM.
