It's the late 1990s — Cuba's Special Period, the years of grinding scarcity that followed the Soviet Union's collapse. Reinaldo has just broken out of a reformatory. He has nothing and nowhere to go. He drifts through Havana's neighbourhoods, taking what he can, attaching himself to whoever is nearby. Magda and Yunisleidy offer something close to warmth, though the city doesn't make that easy. Villaronga shoots without romanticising the poverty: the streets are vivid, hunger is constant, and Reinaldo's survival instinct is the only reliable thing about him.
