Synopsis
Tótem (2023) is a Mexican drama from director Lila Avilés that you can watch online on iFILM. The whole film unfolds across a single day, seen largely through the eyes of seven-year-old Sol as her big, busy family bustles around a party she doesn't yet fully understand.
The occasion is a birthday for her father, Tona, a young painter. Yet beneath the cake, the cooking and the decorations lies a quiet ache: Tona is gravely ill, and this gathering may well be a goodbye. Avilés keeps the camera inside the house, mostly at a child's eye level, catching the things that usually go unseen — the aunts' nervous jokes, the hushed arguments in the kitchen, each relative bracing for the same loss in their own way.
Nothing is announced out loud; you read the dying in how the faces shift. First-time actress Naíma Sentíes carries the whole thing in Sol's steady, watchful gaze. It's hushed, observational cinema for viewers who can sit with a slow rhythm and a devastating ending that never begs for tears. Stream Tótem (2023) online on iFILM.
