Synopsis
Bullet Ballet (1998) is a black-and-white Japanese crime thriller you can watch online on iFILM, written and directed by Shinya Tsukamoto. A Tokyo ad-man learns his girlfriend has shot herself, and can't fathom where she found the gun.
Grief curdles into obsession. He sets out to buy a pistol of his own, meaning to follow her — and the hunt drags him into a turf war among feral young street punks who beat him, rob him, and pull him deeper in. Tsukamoto takes the lead role himself, shooting with a camera that shakes along with the city.
This is raw, jittery work from the heart of Japanese 90s cyberpunk — closer to his Tetsuo films than to any tidy noir, all handheld frenzy, clanging industrial sound, and violence pitched near a trance. Not a cozy watch, but essential for anyone who values uncompromising auteur cinema. Stream Bullet Ballet online on iFILM.
