Synopsis
Vital (2004) is a Japanese psychological thriller from director Shinya Tsukamoto, free to watch online on iFILM. A car crash leaves Hiroshi with no memory — not of his own life, not of the girl who sat beside him in the wreck.
What pulls him back is an old anatomy textbook crammed with sketches of dissections. He enrolls in medical school, and the cadaver assigned to his class turns out to be a young woman he slowly recognizes. Every cut into her body brings a memory flooding back: the sea, the sun, her laugh. The dissection room and his hallucinations begin to bleed together until neither he nor we can tell them apart.
Tadanobu Asano carries the lead, and Tsukamoto — the mind behind the cult classic Tetsuo: The Iron Man — trades his usual industrial shock for something quieter and stranger. This is a cold elegy about grief and the body as the last place love is stored. If you want Japanese arthouse that refuses to hold your hand, start here.
