Synopsis
"Carnival in Flanders" (1935), watch online on iFILM — a French historical comedy by Jacques Feyder that claimed top honours at the Venice Film Festival.
Flanders, 1616. The town of Boom is deep in carnival preparations when word arrives that a Spanish duke and his garrison are stopping for the night. The men fall apart — the burgomaster takes to his bed, faking death. His wife, played by Françoise Rosay, goes the other direction: she steps forward, organises a lavish welcome, and converts what might have been a violent occupation into an elaborate dinner party. Feyder uses the contrast — women composed, men cowering — as a joke that also cuts. A sharp, light-footed satire, and one of the standouts of 1930s French cinema.
