The Forest

The Forest (2016) is an American horror film you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Jason Zada and starring Natalie Dormer in a dual role as twin sisters. When Sara learns her sister Jess has gone missing inside Japan's Aokigahara — the dense woodland at the foot of Mt. Fuji with a grim reputation — she flies out to find her herself.

Against every local's advice Sara ventures into the trees overnight, guided by a foreign journalist (Eoin Macken) she's not sure she trusts. The film draws on real Japanese folklore around yurei, the spirits of the restless dead, and leans into the disorientation of a place where up and down blur together. Dormer handles the dual-sister conceit with enough restraint that the film never collapses into cheap shock cuts.

Shot partly in Serbia with separate Japanese location work, the geography is fiction — but the suffocating atmosphere it builds is the film's real trick. Stream The Forest online on iFILM.
