Synopsis
My Beautiful Broken Brain (2014) is a British documentary you can watch online on iFILM, co-directed by Sophie Robinson and Lotje Sodderland — who is also the subject. At 34, Sodderland survived a hemorrhagic stroke that stripped away her language and dropped her into a sensory world she barely recognized. She began filming herself days later, still in hospital, still unable to read.
That raw footage becomes the backbone of an 84-minute film about altered perception: the post-stroke world for Sodderland was intensely visual, fragmented, dreamlike. Executive produced by David Lynch, whose sensibility fits the material, the documentary doesn't frame recovery as a clean upward arc. It sits with what is genuinely strange about the experience.
