Synopsis
Jacky in the Kingdom of Women (Jacky au royaume des filles, 2014) is a French satirical comedy you can watch online on iFILM, directed by Riad Sattouf. The premise is a gender-flip taken to its logical extreme.
In the Democratic Republic of Bubun, women hold all power and men stay home, cover themselves in public, and dream of a suitable match. Jacky (Vincent Lacoste) is everything a prospective husband should be — modest, domestic, cheerfully obedient — and he has his heart set on catching the eye of the Marshal's daughter at the palace ball. Charlotte Gainsbourg plays the Marshal, a military dictator who runs the country with a calm that suggests no one has seriously tried to challenge her yet.
Sattouf is primarily known as the cartoonist behind The Arab of the Future, and his feature debut has the same quality: real political structures dressed in absurdist costume. Bubun is funny precisely because it is recognisable. Stream Jacky in the Kingdom of Women online on iFILM.
