Synopsis
Ecstasy (Extase, 1933) — watch online on iFILM — is the Czechoslovak drama that made Hedy Lamarr a scandal before Hollywood even knew her name. Director Gustav Machatý shot it with minimal dialogue; the story runs on landscape, silence and Lamarr's face.
Eva marries a wealthy older man who runs his household like a ledger — orderly, precise, no room for desire. She leaves him, retreats to her father's estate. At a forest lake she meets a young engineer, and the film follows where that leads. Her abandoned husband crosses paths with the man who replaced him. The outcome is quiet and irreversible.
Released in 1933, the film was banned across several countries for its frank sensuality — the controversy turned an eighteen-year-old Czech actress into an international name before she had signed a single contract abroad. What remains is a strikingly composed early-sound-era film, closer to silent-cinema expressionism than to conventional drama. Stream Ecstasy (1933) online on iFILM.
