About

Synopsis

Asylum (2005) is David Mackenzie's bleak romantic thriller, adapted from Patrick McGrath's novel, and you can watch online on iFILM. England, the 1950s. Stella, wife of the new deputy superintendent at a high-security psychiatric hospital, moves with her husband and young son into staff quarters behind the walls — and slowly suffocates from boredom and silence.

Her attention fixes on a patient: Edgar, a sculptor committed for the brutal killing of his own wife. What starts as curiosity becomes an affair that ignores decency, danger and reason alike. The deeper Stella sinks, the harder it gets to say who in this place is truly unwell — and the closer the story creeps to a reckoning that will cost a child.

Natasha Richardson plays a woman walking toward her own ruin with open eyes; Marton Csokas is the dangerous man she can't resist, and Ian McKellen the psychiatrist whose interest runs far colder than care. Hugh Bonneville takes the role of the loyal, oblivious husband. A chilly, unsettling study of passion as self-destruction, with no soft landing for anyone. Stream Asylum (2005) online on iFILM.
