Synopsis
The Testament of Dr. Mabuse (Das Testament des Dr. Mabuse, 1933) is Fritz Lang's landmark crime thriller you can watch online on iFILM. Made in Germany and France, running 122 minutes, with Rudolf Klein-Rogge reprising his iconic role and Otto Wernicke as the dogged Commissioner Lohmann.
Mabuse — criminal mastermind, hypnotist, architect of chaos — has been locked in Professor Baum's asylum for years. He cannot speak. What he does instead is write: notebooks filled with schemes for perfect crimes. Then a string of those exact crimes begins playing out across the city. Lohmann has to work out how a mute, institutionalized man is giving orders from behind locked doors — and whether the man doing so is even still entirely human.
Lang shot the film weeks before the Nazi seizure of power. Goebbels banned it almost immediately; the depiction of manufactured terror as a governing strategy hit too close. That suppression turned it into something more than genre entertainment — a piece of political testimony preserved on celluloid. Stream The Testament of Dr. Mabuse (1933) online on iFILM.
