Twelve-year-old Sasha is sent to his aunt in Pyatigorsk while his doctor parents are on assignment in Africa. The new school has its pecking order, and a boy named Marat has no intention of making room for an outsider. When a flood cuts all contact with his parents, Sasha's world contracts to almost nothing. What expands it again is karate — a strict sensei named Dmitriy who spots something worth developing in him, and whose daughter Masha turns out to be one of the few people in Pyatigorsk who actually pays attention.
