Synopsis
Forget the Disney version. Beauty and the Beast (Panna a netvor, 1979) is Czech director Juraj Herz's dark gothic fairy tale, available to watch online on iFILM. The Beast here is no charming prince but a clawed, bird-like creature with a voice in his skull that keeps whispering one word: kill her.
Julie, the youngest daughter of a ruined merchant, walks into a forest castle in her father's place to pay for a stolen rose. She never sees her host — he stays in the dark, speaks from the shadows, leaves food and fine dresses behind. And the more the monster grows attached to her, the harder he has to fight the urge to tear her apart.
Herz, the man behind the cult classic The Cremator, turned a familiar story into a cold horror about love wrestling with predatory instinct, all fog-bound castle, unnerving sound design and real menace. One for viewers who prefer their fairy tales closer to the Brothers Grimm, no sugar. Stream Beauty and the Beast (1979) online on iFILM.
