The week of Halloween, a novelty shop hands her a strange little book called "The Evil Thing," with one rule printed on the cover: don't read it aloud. She reads it aloud. A toothy creature claws its way off the page, and soon both the school's queen bee Priscilla and young Max have vanished. To bring them back before midnight, Cassie has to walk straight into the dark she summoned.

Emily Osment leads the cast, with a small turn from Tobin Bell — yes, Jigsaw from the Saw films. Director Alex Zamm keeps the scares gentle and the mood spooky-cute, the kind of Halloween-night pick that works for tweens and lightly rattles the younger ones.
