Young war veteran Vladimir Sharapov joins the MUR, the city's anti-banditry squad. Together they hunt the Black Cat gang that has all of Moscow terrified. Vladimir Vysotsky plays Zheglov, Vladimir Konkin is Sharapov, with Sergei Yursky, Armen Dzhigarkhanyan and Zinovy Gerdt rounding out the cast.

This five-part television film comes from the Weiner brothers' novel The Era of Mercy, yet it long ago outgrew the book — Zheglov's lines turned into everyday sayings across the country.
