Synopsis
The Legend of the Holy Drinker (1988) — watch online on iFILM. This Italian-French drama directed by Ermanno Olmi adapts the final novella of Joseph Roth, written in Parisian exile in 1939, just weeks before the author's death.
Under the bridges of Paris, a homeless man named Andreas has nothing left. A stranger hands him 200 francs and asks only one thing: give the money to the chapel of Saint Theresa when he can. Andreas agrees. What follows is the slow unraveling of that promise — not through malice but through the thousand small detours of a life already far off course.
Rutger Hauer plays Andreas with a stillness that makes the character's quiet dissolution harder to watch than any outburst could. Olmi took the Golden Lion at Venice in 1988 for this picture. It asks for patience and rewards it fully. Stream The Legend of the Holy Drinker online on iFILM.
