Synopsis
Age of Uprising: The Legend of Michael Kohlhaas (2013) is a historical drama starring Mads Mikkelsen, available to watch online on iFILM. In 16th-century France, horse trader Michael Kohlhaas runs a thriving farm and dotes on his wife and daughter.
A local lord seizes his horses and humiliates him, and every court sides with rank over right. Kohlhaas exhausts the legal road, gets nowhere, and finally takes up the sword. Men rally to him, and the green valleys of the Cévennes go up in flames as one merchant declares war on an entire order to reclaim what was stolen.
Director Arnaud des Pallières adapts Heinrich von Kleist's much-studied novella, moving the action from Germany into the French mountains. Mikkelsen carries it with almost no dialogue — just bearing and a stare. Stark, slow-burning period cinema for viewers who like their revenge tangled up with the question of what justice costs.
