Synopsis
Titus (1999) is Julie Taymor's film adaptation of Shakespeare's earliest and most brutal tragedy — watch it online on iFILM. Anthony Hopkins plays the Roman general Titus Andronicus, with Jessica Lange as Tamora, Queen of the Goths, whose public humiliation sets a revenge cycle in motion that neither character can stop. Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Alan Cumming are among the broader cast. A UK-Italy-US co-production shot largely on location in Rome and Croatia.
Titus returns from war, executes Tamora's son as a ritual sacrifice, and that single act costs him everything that follows: his sons killed, his daughter Lavinia mutilated, his own standing destroyed. Lange plays Tamora less as a villain than as a pragmatist — she marries the emperor and moves methodically. Hopkins, across 162 minutes, traces Titus from decorated general to a man who has simply run out of grief and started calculating.
Taymor came from theater directing — the Broadway Lion King was hers — and her first feature film shows exactly that. Ancient Roman armor sits beside motorcycles and fascist-era architecture without apology. It's a deliberate disorientation that makes the violence feel less like history and more like argument.
