Synopsis
Phantom of the Opera (1943) is the Universal horror melodrama you can watch online on iFILM. This was the first Technicolor take on Gaston Leroux's novel, and the studio spent the money where it shows — the Paris opera house glows in deep, saturated color you rarely got from the era.
At the heart of it is Erique Claudin, a soft-spoken violinist who quietly funds singing lessons for young soprano Christine Dubois and asks nothing back. Acid disfigures his face, his mind slips, and a masked figure takes up residence beneath the theater. From there he clears Christine's road to stardom by removing anyone in the way. Claude Rains plays Claudin with that signature wounded menace; Susanna Foster is Christine, with Nelson Eddy and Edgar Barrier as the suitors competing for her.
Director Arthur Lubin leaned into music and spectacle rather than dread, and the gamble paid off at the ceremony: the film picked up two Oscars, for cinematography and art direction. It's less frightening than the silent 1925 version and a lot more operatic — heavy on arias, light on chills. For lovers of old Hollywood and gothic romance, it's an easy pick.
