Synopsis
Sanshiro Sugata (1943) is a Japanese drama you can watch online on iFILM. It marks the directing debut of Akira Kurosawa, adapted from Tsuneo Tomita's novel. Meiji-era Japan, the 1880s: a hot-blooded young man arrives in the city wanting to learn how to fight.
He first attaches himself to a jujutsu school. Then he watches judo master Shogoro Yano take down a pack of hired thugs single-handed, and everything shifts. Sanshiro begs to become his student. What he gets is less training than a hard remaking of his character. Yano demands humility, not muscle. After one reckless outburst, the master orders him into a freezing pond, and the boy clings to a stake all night until a lotus opens beside him at dawn. Denjiro Okochi plays Yano; Susumu Fujita is Sanshiro.
It is easy to pass this one over — black and white, barely 80 minutes, made in wartime. Yet Kurosawa's instincts are already on screen: fights with real weight, weather pushing the drama, a hero who only grows through pain. A great pick for anyone into early martial-arts and samurai cinema who wants to see where a master started. Stream Sanshiro Sugata (1943) online on iFILM.
