Synopsis
The Phantom of the Opera (1962) is a Hammer gothic horror you can watch online on iFILM. Director Terence Fisher moves the old legend into a foggy Victorian London of hansom cabs and gas lamps.
Beneath an opera house lives a man in a mask. He was once Professor Petrie, a gentle composer who poured his life into one great opera — until Lord Ambrose d'Arcy, the theatre's vain owner, stole the score and claimed it as his own. Acid and a printworks fire did the rest, leaving the musician scarred and hidden away. Now he watches a young soprano named Christine from the shadows, ready to abduct her so his music is finally heard the way he meant it.
Herbert Lom plays the Phantom not as a monster but as a ruined, grieving man, while Michael Gough relishes the role of the cold-hearted lord. Hammer's take trades cheap shocks for pity and tragedy, all of it in lush color. Fans of old-school British horror and Gaston Leroux adaptations will want this one.
