Synopsis
Pompo the Cinephile (2021) is a Japanese anime about making movies you can watch online on iFILM. Director Takayuki Hirao adapts Shogakukan's web manga into a brisk love letter to the editing room.
In the fictional film capital of "Nyallywood," teenage producer Pompo cranks out snappy B-grade crowd-pleasers. Her shy, movie-obsessed assistant Gene gets handed an impossible gift — go direct your own picture. Meanwhile Natalie arrives in town chasing an acting dream. The whole thing runs under ninety-five minutes, most of it circling a cutting bench.
Hirao shoots the grind of production like a thrill ride: the pacing is cut like a trailer, and editing itself becomes the subject.
