Synopsis
Mai Mai Miracle (マイマイ新子と千年の魔法, 2009) is a Japanese animated feature you can watch online on iFILM. Set in rural Yamaguchi at the close of the 1950s, it follows nine-year-old Shinko, a country girl who lives among the rice fields and soaks up her grandfather's tales of how this land looked long ago.
When Kiiko, a quiet newcomer from Tokyo, moves in, Shinko gains a friend and a partner for inventing whole worlds. Her imagination carries her a thousand years back, to the Heian era and a lonely young princess about her own age. The two threads run side by side, centuries apart, while real life keeps intruding in grown-up ways — quarrels, loss, a first brush with death. The daydreaming never rescues the children from any of it, but it gives them a way to bear it.
Director Sunao Katabuchi would go on to make In This Corner of the World, and the same patience shows here, adapted from Nobuko Takagi's autobiographical novel in soft, watercolor animation closer to Takahata than to anything action-driven. It suits viewers who treasure gentle films about childhood, memory and the pull of imagination. Stream Mai Mai Miracle (2009) online on iFILM.
