Summer Ghost

Summer Ghost (2021) is a 40-minute anime short you can watch online on iFILM — the directorial debut of illustrator loundraw, spun from an urban legend about a spirit summoned by fireworks.

Three teenagers gather at an abandoned airfield and light sparklers to call Ayane, a young ghost rumored to answer any question put to her. Each of them turned up for a private reason, and Ayane hands them an uneasy truth: only people who are themselves close to death can see her at all. It's a quiet, aching piece about adolescent pain and the stubborn will to keep living, drawn in loundraw's soft, recognizable watercolor style. Voiced by Chiaki Kobayashi and Miyuri Shimabukuro.
