The Adventures of Rocky & Bullwinkle

The Adventures of Rocky & Bullwinkle (2000) — watch online on iFILM — is a live-action and animation comedy directed by Des McAnuff, based on the American cartoon that aired from 1959 to 1964. Boris Badenov and Natasha Fatale escape their animated world and team up with Fearless Leader, a cartoon villain reinvented as a cable-news mogul. Rocky the flying squirrel and Bullwinkle the moose get called in by the FBI — the only two who have ever stopped this particular trio before.

Robert De Niro plays Fearless Leader and produced the film through his Tribeca Productions, which explains the cast: Renée Russo, Jason Alexander, Randy Quaid. Cameos from John Goodman, Whoopi Goldberg, and Kenan Thompson round things out, and Industrial Light & Magic handled the effects. It works best as a nostalgia trip for viewers who grew up with the original show — the jokes are built for that audience, and the animation-meets-reality gimmick holds up well enough.
